About Mile High Queer Sports
Who we are and how we’re organized.
How we’re organized
Mile High Queer Sports is is Denver-based and queer-operated, creating unique sporting events thru our two organizations: Mile High Dodgeball and Mile High Climbing.
Mile High Dodgeball brings our tournaments unlike any other — Mile High Shootout in spring, Mayhem of Minis in fall, both featuring our one-of-a-kind Dodgeball After Dark.
Mile High Climbing runs our multi-week climbing leagues, offering a Bouldering League at The Spot Denver, and a new Ropes League at Movement Baker.
Coming 2027, we're partnering with other Denver-based, queer-focused sports leagues to host Mile High Queer Sports Fest. Mark you calendars and join us April 30 - May 2, 2027!
The organizers
Brian(He\Him)
Founder
Brian fell in love with community organizing through sports in late 2018. While enjoying an after dodgeball league social in late 2019, the idea of Dodgeball After Dark tournament emerged. Like so many other aspects of life, COVID delayed the start, but 2022 launched the first semi-annual tournament: Mile High Shootout. Brian loves working with a small team of his close friends to put on such a fun and unique event that folks can look forward to.
Eventually, the semi-annual frequency of event organizing was leaving an unscratched itch. Brian's dodgeball friends had started a new, Denver-based sports league and another idea emerged. Rekindling his top hobby from the early 2010's, he created a Bouldering League in the fall of 2023. An amazing community emerged, and with another small team of close friends, he's excited to see it grow!
Octy
Chief Information Officer
Octy is the vibe emanating with Mile High Dodgeball, and the spark for Mile High Queer Sports Fest. He's so fierce on the dodgeball court but his welcoming personality off the court has brought folks back to Denver year after year. He spearheads nearly all the off-court festivities: coordinating with our marketing and graphic design minds, curating the social events and locations, and overall making sure the experience is complete.
Off the court, you'll find Octy gallivanting around the world. Take him to an escape room in your city while he's there!
Sonny
Climbing Manager, Webmaster
Sonny is a manager of Mile High Climbing, and helps ensure Mile High Dodgeball executes smoothly. His consistency is matched only by his generosity; he is always willing to go the extra mile to help those in need. This combination makes him a rock in the league, while also pushing for constant improvements to the community experience. From the climbing dashboards to this website, and all of the best climbing photos and videos on our socials, Sonny has the tech and the vision to capture the moment.
When not on the wall or behind the camera, you'll find Sonny organizing amazing events to enable others to volunteer with Gay for Good.
Jimmy
Climbing Manager
Jimmy is a manager of Mile High Climbing, and the principal reason for it's expansion into ropes. His drive for growth and improvement reinvigorated our climbing offerings, stepping up the experience on the wall but galvanizing the community off the wall. He's brought so many folks into the climbing community, and his travels around the nation have been an inspiring journey to watch. His community-focus and logistics-mindset also makes him invaluable to the execution of Mile High Dodgeball.
Off the wall, you'll find Jimmy with his pup, Whipper, pulling on real rocks outdoors, traveling to new state or national parks, or socializing with friends at a local watering hole.
Phil(He\Him)
Logistics Manager
Phil joined the Mile High Dodgeball team and took our planning and logistics to the next level. His meticulous assessment of past events, focus on player experience, and ability to clearly articulate the vision to assemble literally hundreds of folks onto the same page is astounding. The back-end tools he's assembled can be seen at a variety of tournaments around the country, a testament to their clarity and effectiveness. His critical thinking has made him an invaluable sounding board for all aspects of Mile High Queer Sports.
Off the court and away from the screen, you'll catch Phil organizing and participating in a variety of social elimination games such as Amazing Race and Survivor. He's probably also wearing a blue shirt.
Katie(She\Her)
Representation Consultant
Katie joined the Mile High team to keep the boys in line, embodying the trope of the hyper-competent lesbian who keeps the entire production running smoothly. Unafraid to speak her mind, she brought a fresh perspective to the Mile High Dodgeball offerings on and off the court, ensuring we continue to curate the experience we intend to.
Ezra
Graphic Designer
Ezra has returned to Mile High with curating thoughtful graphics that convey more than just our logistics but our vibe. If you catch him between flights, you'll understand why he's the perfect choice: he is deeply caring, fiercely loyal, and incredibly hard working.
Shane
Graphic Artist
Shane is the mastermind behind the Dodgeball After Dark teams, creating the jaw-dropping artwork to elevate the vibe of D.A.D. Often leaning into juxtaposition, his eye-catching artwork includes sub-layers or cultural references that always bring a smile.
Give him a follow to see his new work on IG @sketchesbyshane.
John Michael(He\Him)
Bookkeeper
John Michael is the most recent addition to the Mile High team. Although a fixture in the Denver queer sports community, John Micheal focuses on the back-end logistics to ensure the organization runs smoothly.
